PokeMMO Level Caps and Obedience

Each regional story has a badge-based level cap. Excess experience is stored, over-cap Pokemon faint themselves in battle, and defeating a region's Elite Four raises its cap to 100.

A Pokemon above the current regional cap will faint itself when sent into battle. Excess experience is stored rather than lost and is applied when the cap rises.

Johto has an additional story step: defeating Ho-Oh raises the cap to 55 before the regional Elite Four completion raises it to 100.

What Happens Above the Cap

When an over-cap Pokemon enters battle, it faints itself rather than obeying as a normal party member. This applies even when the Pokemon came from another region where its level was legal.

Field moves remain usable, so an over-cap Pokemon can still help with travel outside battle. Do not rely on it for trainers or wild battles until the current region's cap reaches its level.

Stored Experience

Experience gained at the cap is stored as rollover. When story progress raises the cap, the stored amount is applied and the Pokemon may level immediately. The July 2026 update also confirms that Exp. Candies used at the cap now store excess experience instead of discarding it.

This makes training near a badge boundary less wasteful, but it does not let a Pokemon fight above the cap early.

Caps When Changing Regions

Caps belong to each regional storyline. Completing Kanto does not make a level 62 team immediately usable at the start of Unova. When you change regions, build a team that fits the destination's current badge row.

For controlled training, the Exp. Share location guide explains the current held-item system.
